Decidable first-order modal logics with counting quantifiers

چکیده
In this paper, we examine the computational complexity of various natural onevariable fragments of first-order modal logics with the addition of arbitrary counting quantifiers. The addition of counting quantifiers provides us a rich language with which to succinctly express statements about the quantity of objects satisfying a given property, using only a single variable. We provide optimal upper bounds on the complexity of the decision problem for several one-variable fragments, by establishing the finite model property. In particular, we show that the decision (validity) problem for the one-variable fragment of the minimal first-order modal logic QK with counting quantifiers is coNExpTime-complete. In the propositional setting, these results also provide optimal upper bounds for many two-dimensional modal logics in which one component is von Wright’s logic of ‘elsewhere’.

Decidable and Undecidable Fragments of First-Order Branching Temporal Logics
In this paper we analyze the decision problem for fragments of first-order extensions of branching time temporal logics such as computational tree logics CTL and CTL or Prior’s Ockhamist logic of historical necessity. On the one hand, we show that the one-variable fragments of logics like first-order C T L —such as the product of propositional C T L with simple propositional modal logic S5, or ...
متن کاملIdempotent Transductions for Modal Logics
We investigate the extension of modal logics by bisimulation quantifiers and present a class of modal logics which is decidable when augmented with bisimulation quantifiers. These logics are refered to as the idempotent transduction logics and are defined using the programs of propositional dynamic logic including converse and tests. This is a nontrivial extension of the decidability of the pos...
متن کاملModal Logics Between Propositional and First-order
One can add the machinery of relation symbols and terms to a propositional modal logic without adding quantifiers. Ordinarily this is no extension beyond the propositional. But if terms are allowed to be non-rigid, a scoping mechanism (usually written using lambda abstraction) must also be introduced to avoid ambiguity. Since quantifiers are not present, this is not really a first-order logic, ...
متن کاملOne-dimensional Fragment of First-order Logic
We introduce a novel decidable fragment of first-order logic. The fragment is one-dimensional in the sense that quantification is limited to applications of blocks of existential (universal) quantifiers such that at most one variable remains free in the quantified formula. The fragment is closed under Boolean operations, but additional restrictions (called uniformity conditions) apply to combin...
متن کاملBisimulation Quantified Logics: Undecidability
In this paper we introduce a general semantic interpretation for propositional quantification in all multi-modal logics based on bisimulations (bisimulation quantification). Bisimulation quantification has previously been considered in the context of isolated modal logics, such as PDL (D’Agostino and Hollenberg, 2000), intuitionistic logic (Pitts, 1992) and logics of knowledge (French 2003). We...
